I'm not sure if you can customize which characters are on your team, but I personally don't care, the default trios work well together. Being able to send/request items is genius, and skim-boosting is nice as well. At first I was worried they would take away from the experience, but instead I think I would *rather* play the team racing instead of regular racing (which IS an option). I actually think the team mechanics are done very well in this game. For one, they don't explain the differences between Speed, Technique, and Power type racers very well. The Story Mode is literally supposed to be a tutorial, but I found myself not learning a lot of things until late. While I don't really have any gripes with the mechanics themselves, I do think they're a bit overwhelming at first, especially for a game that's meant to be more casual than Transformed.
I like how they aren't just random objects, but Wisps, which are established in the Sonic universe.
I do think some races go for way too long though, especially considering the draft mechanic basically adds sandbagging (with skill). At least you still have plenty of boost opportunities. There's also the speed issue, yeah, it is a bit too slow. I can't explain how it's different from Transformed, but it is. It did take a couple of races to get used to, but not long. I've seen people complain about the handling. Chao is an odd choice, as is Zavok, and of course there's other characters I rather would've had, like Jet and Cream (and my dream pick: Gamma). (At least that's how it feels with my personal favorites). If you're a fan of any secondary Sonic character, you'll have a blast playing as them, because you really *feel* like you're playing as your character. They all get a lot of voice lines, have great voice acting overall, and it's great just to see some of these characters. The roster is 15 characters, which is a bit small, however the characters you have here are (almost) all solid choices.
Sonic car racing game series#
So yeah, we know this series can do better, but that being said, it's still a good game, and I hope I can help explain why. Once you get to chapter 4 or so it becomes a blast because you have 12 characters/racers. If you stick to Story Mode, you'll have fewer racers to start, so I can see why people are turned away. Also, I personally started to enjoy the game the more I played it. If you come off of Transformed to this game, you will likely be disappointed. Smaller roster, less interesting tracks, etc. Yeah, it's not as good as Transformed, I'll get that out of the way. Let's address the elephant in the room: the prequels. I'll be making it in sections, so you can focus on what's most important to you if you want. Thanks in advance if you take the time to read it.
